Best Charities to Donate to for Year-End & Holiday Giving 2026

Published Date:

October 13, 2026

This list covers charities running holiday and year-end giving campaigns in 2026, from Africa Relief and Community Development (ARCD) to four of the best-known names in international giving. Each one explains on its own website what a holiday gift supports, and several let you give in someone's name with a card to match. Below, you'll find what each charity is offering this season, how to choose between them, and the timing rules worth knowing before the year ends.

‍

You'll find what each organization supports, how its giving options work, and what to consider before donating. For U.S. donors hoping to claim a deduction for the 2026 tax year, we'll also explain the key year-end timing considerations and how tax deadlines can differ from holiday gift-catalog deadlines.

Charities to Consider for Holiday & Year-End Giving in 2026:

‍

‍

We chose organizations that meet two criteria. Each works on the health or basic needs of children and families, and each makes its record checkable, either through public financial filings and a transparency rating or through a published independent evaluation.

‍

‍

1. Africa Relief and Community Development (ARCD)

‍

ARCD works in Africa, across 32 countries, with six regional offices that embed teams in the communities they serve. This holiday season, two main priorities are:

‍

  • Food and nutrition, including food assistance for families in crisis and feeding programs for malnourished children and mothers, who are identified through screenings.
  • Orphan sponsorship, which keeps a child in family care through monthly cash support for the guardian, school supplies and a social worker who carries out regular well-being checks.

‍

Gifts toward clean water support community water-project work, starting from $50, and donors who fund a complete well receive proof of completion where available, including photos, videos and location details.

‍

ARCD's 2025 Form 990 is public, and its Candid profile carries the Platinum Seal of Transparency.

‍

‍

2. UNICEF USA

‍

‍

UNICEF USA raises funds for UNICEF's work for children in more than 190 countries. Its holiday Inspired Gifts collection lets donors send real supplies, such as therapeutic food for malnourished children, school supplies and blankets, in honor of someone on their list. The recipient gets an e-greeting or a print-at-home card. UNICEF uses each gift where the need is greatest at the time.

‍

‍

3. Save the Children

‍

‍

Save the Children promotes its holiday Gift Catalog as an alternative to physical presents at Christmas and Hanukkah. Donors choose gifts such as education for children or clean water kits and can send a free personalized card explaining how children benefit. The catalog states that each gift supports a program area and that a portion supports general operations, so a gift represents a type of help rather than one specific item.

‍

‍

4. World Vision

‍

‍

World Vision, a Christian humanitarian organization that serves people regardless of religion, launched its 2026 Christmas Gift Catalog on September 14. The catalog includes clean water, healthcare, farm animals, emergency aid and education. Donations made by December 9 are delivered in time for Christmas.

‍

‍

5. Heifer International

‍

‍

Heifer International funds livestock, seeds and training so families can feed themselves and earn an income. Its Holiday Gift Guide starts at $20 for a flock of chicks, and a goat costs $120. Families who receive support commit to passing on animals, seeds or training to another family, so a single gift can keep reaching new households.

How to Choose Among These Holiday Giving Charities

‍

‍

The easiest way to choose is to start with what you want your gift to do, then match it to the charity built for that purpose.

‍

  • If you want to support families across Africa through food, care for an orphaned child or emergency relief, ARCD's programs focus on exactly that.
  • If you want to give a present in someone's name, the holiday catalogs from UNICEF USA, Save the Children, World Vision and Heifer International pair each gift with a card for the person you are honoring.
  • If you want to know exactly where your money goes, read each catalog's terms before you choose, since some gifts fund the wider program an item represents rather than that exact item.

‍

Where your gift goes matters too. Giving USA 2026 found that international affairs organizations received $33.02 billion of the $617.20 billion given to U.S. charities in 2025, and that giving to them grew just 1.4% after inflation. A year-end gift to work abroad supports a cause that receives a small share of U.S. giving.

‍

You don't have to choose only one. Splitting a year-end budget between a program you can follow closely and a holiday catalog gift for someone on your list is a reasonable way to balance the two. If you would like your gift to count toward this tax year, giving a little early, especially when mailing a check, leaves room for the timing rules below.

Adding ARCD to Your List of Best Charities for Year-End Giving

‍

‍

If you want your holiday gift to support families across Africa, choose the ARCD program that fits your priority: food and nutrition for families facing hunger, or ongoing care for an orphaned child. A full orphan sponsorship is $60 a month on ARCD's sponsorship page, and you can sponsor a child in honor or in memory of a loved one, which makes it a meaningful holiday gift.

FAQs

‍

1. Is a GivingTuesday gift treated differently from other donations?

No. For tax purposes, a gift made on GivingTuesday follows the same rules as a donation on any other day. Giving on December 1 simply leaves a full month before December 31, which helps if you plan to mail a check or request a match.

‍

2. Will I get a receipt for a mailed gift?

Yes. Once your mailed gift arrives, ARCD sends a tax receipt directly to your address. Keep it with your records for the 2026 tax year.

‍

3. Is a gift made in someone's name tax-deductible?

It can be, but the deduction belongs to you as the person who paid, not to the person you honored. If the charity sends you something in return, such as a handcrafted item, you can generally deduct only the amount above that item's value. For payments over $75 that are partly a gift and partly a purchase, the IRS requires the charity to give you a written estimate of what you received.

‍

4. How can I tell a real charity from a holiday scam?

Search the organization's name in the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search to confirm it can receive deductible gifts. Then give through the charity's official website by typing the address yourself, rather than following a payment link in a text message or social media post. If an appeal pressures you to give immediately or asks for gift cards, treat that as a warning sign.
