Aqiqah is the blessed Sunnah of slaughtering an animal upon the birth of a child. It is a practice rooted in gratitude to Allah (SWT) and generosity to those around us. It is an act of worship, a public announcement of the new life He has bestowed, and an opportunity to share joy with the poor and the needy.

Aqiqah is a confirmed Sunnah (Sunnah Mu'akkadah), meaning it is strongly recommended but not obligatory. However, it is one of the most beloved acts a parent can perform upon the birth of a child. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ performed Aqiqah for his grandchildren, Hasan and Husain (may Allah be pleased with them), and encouraged his companions to do the same.
For a boy, two goats or sheep are recommended. For a girl, one goat or sheep is sufficient. The animal must be healthy, free from any visible defect (such as blindness, lameness, or severe illness), and of appropriate age — at least one year for a sheep or goat. ARCD ensures all animals sourced for your Aqiqah meet full Islamic requirements.
The preferred time is on the seventh day after the child's birth. If that is not possible, it can be performed on the 14th or 21st day. Most scholars agree that Aqiqah may be performed at any point in the child's life, and some scholars hold that it can even be done after the child has reached adulthood. It is never too late to perform this blessed act.
ARCD distributes Aqiqah meat through its established Food and Nutrition Program, which operates across 32 African countries. Once your donation is received, ARCD coordinates with local field partners and community volunteers to procure the animal and distribute the fresh meat to impoverished families — including orphans, widows, and families affected by food insecurity, conflict, or natural disaster.
Yes. ARCD provides donors with confirmation once the Aqiqah has been carried out. You will also receive the name used for the sacrifice (your child's name), giving you full assurance that your religious duty has been properly fulfilled on behalf of your child.
