When 1.34 billion people lack safe water, the result is more than just thirst; it is a leading cause of mortality via waterborne diseases. For many families, "access" means walking for hours every day, a burden that prevents women from pursuing economic opportunities and keeps children out of the classroom.

In many rural communities across Sub-Saharan Africa, collecting water is the responsibility of women and girls. The average household may spend three to six hours every day traveling to and from a water source, often a shared, unprotected riverbank or hand-dug hole that serves an entire village.
