Kaffarah is an expiation paid to atone for certain broken oaths or obligations in Islam. It is an act of accountability before Allah, offering a path to seek forgiveness and make amends. Given on behalf of yourself or a loved one, it is a sincere step toward spiritual redemption.
Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:89)

Sahih Bukhari 1936

Not all expiation in Islam is the same. Kaffarah and Fidya each apply to different circumstances, with distinct obligations and amounts. Knowing which applies to you ensures your expiation is fulfilled correctly.
Paid by someone who intentionally broke a Ramadan fast or a sworn oath without a valid excuse. It is a conscious act of atonement before Allah.
Feed 60 poor people per broken fast, or fast 60 consecutive days
Feed 10 poor people per broken oath, or clothe them, or fast 3 days
Qada alone does not remove the obligation for an intentional break
ARCD directs it to our Food and Nutrition Program — 60 verified meals distributed on your behalf
"Its expiation is the feeding of ten needy people…" (Qur'an 5:89)
Applies to the elderly, chronically ill, or pregnant and breastfeeding women who cannot make up missed fasts. It is an act of compassion, not atonement.
Feed one poor person for each missed fast day
No wrongdoing involved — only a physical limitation
If the fast can be made up later, Qada applies and Fidya does not
ARCD directs it to our Food and Nutrition Program — one verified meal per missed day
"…a ransom of feeding a poor person for each day missed." (Qur'an 2:184)

Kaffarah is the Islamic prescribed expiation — a defined act of atonement — required when a Muslim breaks a solemn oath, intentionally breaks a Ramadan fast without a valid excuse, or commits other specified violations.
The most common types are Kaffarah for a broken oath (Kaffaratul Yameen), Kaffarah for intentionally breaking a Ramadan fast, and Kaffarah for Zihar. Each has a specific obligation defined in the Qur'an and Sunnah.
You must feed 60 poor people one full meal each. If unable, you must fast 60 consecutive days. ARCD accepts Kaffarah payments and distributes food to 60 verified eligible individuals on your behalf through our Food and Nutrition Program.
Only intentionally breaking a Ramadan fast without a valid excuse triggers Kaffarah. Accidental violations require making up (Qada) the missed fast only — not Kaffarah.
The cost is calculated based on feeding one poor person per required meal. ARCD sets the rate based on actual food costs in the regions we serve, so your obligation is fulfilled to the highest standard.
