How Your 2026 Year-End Donations Can Change Lives in Africa

Published Date:

October 16, 2026

According to the UN's 2026 State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World report, 56.6 percent of Africa's population experienced moderate or severe food insecurity in 2025. For a family, that can mean uncertainty about the next meal. For a child who has lost a parent, the concern is who will provide care in the years ahead.

‍

Year-end donations can help fund responses to these needs. This guide explains the food-security pressures facing communities, how ARCD's winter appeal supports families and children, and what to check before choosing a donation amount.

What Families in Africa Are Facing This Winter

‍

‍

Three concerns shape the months ahead for many families: the cost of food, a weather shock that is still building, and the long-term care of children who have lost a parent. Each affects how far a family's resources can stretch.

‍

‍

1. Food Costs Are Out of Reach for Many Families

‍

Hunger in Africa is often a question of cost, not just supply. The same UN report found that 66.6 percent of Africa's population could not afford a healthy diet, more than double the share in Asia or Latin America and the Caribbean. For families who already cannot afford a healthy diet, any rise in food prices can quickly mean fewer meals.

‍

‍

2. El Niño Could Increase Food Insecurity

‍

FEWS NET, the Famine Early Warning Systems Network, reports that El Niño reached very strong levels in September 2026, only the seventh time since 1950. Below-average rains in parts of East Africa and the Sahel are expected to cut crop and livestock production, on top of conflict and high food prices. The worst hunger usually comes later, in the lean season after an El Niño, when families have used up their food stocks. Two places are of particular concern:

‍

‍

FEWS NET says early warning gives time to act before hunger peaks, which is why support given now matters.

‍

‍

3. Orphaned Children Need Care That Lasts

‍

A child who has lost a parent needs support that continues long after the holidays. Orphaned children often face hunger, poverty and exclusion from school, and without consistent help they risk child labor and dropping out of education. The relatives raising them are often stretched thin, which makes steady, year-round support as important as any single gift.

How Year-End Donations Help African Families and Children

‍

‍

A year-end gift through ARCD responds to these concerns in two ways. Food aid meets an urgent need this winter, while orphan sponsorship builds stability for a child over the years ahead.

‍

‍

Food Aid for Families Facing Hunger

‍

ARCD's food and nutrition program provides immediate food assistance and nutrition support for communities facing hunger, conflict and disaster. This winter, that means emergency meals and food ration bags that reach families when they need them most. A food gift cannot solve every problem a family faces, but it helps cover an immediate need during a difficult stretch of the year.

‍

‍

Orphan Sponsorship That Supports Children All Year

‍

ARCD's orphan sponsorship keeps children with their families rather than placing them in orphanages, so a child can grow up with the people who know them best. Each sponsored child receives:

‍

  • Monthly cash support for the guardian raising them, to cover essentials such as food, utilities and household needs.
  • A social worker who carries out regular well-being checks, offers psychosocial support and monitors the child's health and schooling.
  • School supplies, including bags, books and stationery.
  • Essential support, including healthcare, through the winter appeal's orphan care.
  • Special gifts during Ramadan and Eid.

‍

Together, these forms of support are designed to help children stay in school and remain with family, while easing pressure on their guardians.

Making Year-End Donations to Africa With ARCD

‍

‍

ARCD focuses exclusively on Africa, connecting urgent relief with long-term, family-based support. We work on the ground in 32 African countries, and our mission is to facilitate dignity to vulnerable African communities. Food aid and orphan sponsorship show both sides of that approach: one meets an urgent need, the other builds stability over years. Needs are rising faster than resources this season, and holiday donations to Africa help keep our response going.

FAQs

‍

1. Does El Niño affect all of Africa the same way?

No. FEWS NET expects Southern Africa to see below-average rains from October 2026 to March 2027, with the most severe food insecurity during the November 2027 to March 2028 lean season. The Horn of Africa faces the opposite risk, with heavy rains and flooding likely during the October to December 2026 season.

‍

2. If the worst comes in 2027, why give now?

Because the effects outlast the weather. FEWS NET warns that El Niño can erode households' ability to cope, so families face the next shock with fewer resources. Early assistance can help households prepare for the lean season and preserve their ability to cope.

‍

3. Can I support education, healthcare or clean water instead?

Yes. Alongside the winter appeal, you can give to education, which helps keep orphaned children in school by covering school fees and learning needs. You can also give to healthcare, which helps children and families reach basic medical care, or to water wells in Africa, which bring clean water to communities. Each of these runs year-round.

‍

4. Is my winter gift tax-deductible?

ARCD is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit with EIN 46-2568671, and it holds Candid's Platinum Seal of Transparency. Donations may be tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. A tax professional can confirm how a gift applies to your own return.

‍

5. Can I raise money with friends and family?

Yes. The winter appeal includes an option to start your own winter fundraiser, set up a page and share it with the people closest to you. It is a simple way to turn a holiday gathering into support for families and children across Africa.
